Story 14 By Calum Storrie

There had been a fête at the almshouses opposite our house that Sunday. It was September and it had rained for most of the day. In the late afternoon I glanced out of the window overlooking the Balls Pond Road and saw a trio of Pearlies waiting at the bus stop opposite. I rushed and got my camera and ran outside… from across the road I asked if they would mind if I took their picture and they immediately assembled into a line.

In a gap between traffic I took one picture and then crossed the road to speak to them. They were the Pearly King and Queen of Islington and the Pearly Queen of Hackney. I told them that I had a photograph of Pearlies from the 1970s on the wall at the top of our house and thought they might like to see it. Their bus was slow to arrive so I had time to go and get the photograph and bring it down. The photograph was taken in East Ham by Patrick Ward for an article in New Society. The Pearlies at the bus stop thought they recognised the couple in this photograph and they took a snap of it to show to the rest of the family. As they got on the bus they told me that they would all be at St Martin-in-the-Fields soon for the Pearly Thanksgiving Service along with many other Pearly Kings and Queens from around London.

After tracking them down through their website (www.thepearlies.com) I put Patrick Ward in touch with them and he sent them copies of other pictures he had taken back in 1970. Teresa Watt, the Pearly Queen of Clapton told me that one of these (www.patrickwardphoto.com) shows: ‘Great Uncle George (The Pearly King of London) his son, Vic, the current Pearly King of London, my Great Aunt Sadie and my two cousins’. They never did identify the couple shown in the Patrick Ward photograph that I have. You can see it here:brooklynrail.org
