When it comes to collecting photography, the rules are far from black and white.
This short course, led by the Print Sales Gallery team at The Photographers’ Gallery, will equip you with the know-how to confidently start buying photographs. This introduction will suit anyone beginning to explore collecting photographs, whether they're interested in contemporary or vintage work.
The two sessions combine a detailed talk with our photography sales experts and an exclusive visit to an auction house.
An Introduction to Collecting at The Photographers’ Gallery
Monday 8 May 18.00 – 20.00
Led by our expert Print Sales team you will receive introductory information that you need to begin collecting photographs. Topics covered will include understanding your own motivations, an introduction to the photography market and information about the practical aspects of collecting, such as photographic processes, what to avoid and what to look out for and how to care for your photographs.
Buying and selling photographs at auction, Sothebys
Monday 15 May 10.00 – 11.30
This session is led by Brandei Estes, Head of Photographs at Sothebys London, and will guide you through some of the market trends in fine art photography, as well as the key things to know about buying and selling photographs at auction.
The morning will end with an exclusive preview of the Sotheby’s Photography Auction before the official opening party of the photographs auction, the following day.
Each participant will receive a VIP pass to Photo London 2017 that takes place at Somerset House from the 17 – 21 May 2017.
You will be invited to join The Photographers’ Gallery patrons at an exclusive curators tour of The Radical Eye, The Elton John Collection at the Tate Modern on Wednesday 26 April from 8.45 – 10am, prior to the start of the collecting course.
