INFO

This photography project idea is aimed at getting pupils to look at their environment in a new way and focus on colour within their photographs.

This activity is designed to be used while doing street photography, but could be applied to any location, portrait or still life.

Activity:

1. Write a list of colours and a list of subjects/ areas of photographic focus (you could ask pupils to write these themselves).

Print these and cut them out. Place the colours in one bag and the subjects/ areas of photographic focus in the other.

2. In a location of your choice ask pupils to select one piece of paper from each bag, this is now their assignment. They must make photographs that contain the colour and subject stipulated.

Pupils can either select individual assignments or a single assignment can be set to the whole group. If following assignments as a group, images can be compared and contrasted to see how the same directive created a variety of responses.

3. Once pupils have exhausted their first set of instructions, bring the group back together and ask them to select another. Continue in this way until you have used all of your allocated time.

4. In a follow-up session print or project the pupils' work, compare work created using the same assignment. Ask pupils to discuss whether this activity made them photograph things in a different way? What did they enjoy or dislike about the activity?

Tips / suggestions:

  • If possible you can add an additional bag where pupils can select the location (shop, street, playing field etc).
  • When writing the subject assignments it can work well to have some clear examples (e.g shadows) and some more ambiguous examples that are open to interpretation (e.g. inside-out).
