Talks & Events
Folio Friday May 2017
photographers set up from 11.30
Fri 12 May, 13.00-17.00
Folio Friday, April 2017
Photographers are invited to present their work to our audiences at these open portfolio afternoons in our Eranda Studio.
Folio Friday sessions begin with a social lunch (provided free of charge for all participating photographers) and a short introduction to the day, as well as talks, from Steve Macleod and photographer Rick Findler.
Each photographer sets their work out at a 120 x 90cm table. Tables can be reserved in advance on a first come, first served basis (see email contact below).
There are 12 places per day and, in an effort to ensure as many people as possible can show their work, we ask that if you secure a session that you don't reapply for two years.
Participating photographers are provided with
- access to the studio space from 11.30 on the day (where we offer an informal lunch with session hosts)
- a table and three chairs
- power sockets
- an A4 stand-up sign holder with your name
- promotion via our website, social media and in-house (please give us your social media handle)
You can choose how you wish to present work – as a loose-leaf portfolio, a book or in digital form. You will need to bring gloves for handling (if desired), or your own laptop or any other equipment necessary to show your work digitally.
Photographers are politely requested to
- arrive by 12.00 for lunch and the briefing
- remain for the full hours of the public session (13.00 - 17.00)
- use the tables only for showing your work
- consider that your work may be viewed by children and young people
- leave the space in its original condition and tidy after use, making use of bins for any rubbish
Rick Findler is an award winning photojournalist based in south west London. He has documented some of the most hard hitting news stories in war-ridden countries such as Syria, Iraq, Libya and Somalia.
Rick has a talent for getting access to places that are especially difficult to report from. In 2012 he was smuggled through the closed borders of Syria to document the beginning of the Syrian uprising, where his pictures of the Syrian conflict were widely recognised by The Picture Editors Guild Awards, Professional Photographer of the Year Awards and were exhibited in the National Theatre as part of the Press Photographers Year 2013 exhibition.
More recently, Rick's images from the anti-presidential violence in Burundi was voted 'Best in Show' at Photomonth International Photography Festival, and has also just returned from documenting the oldest monastic community in the world on the Holy Mountain of Mount Athos, which was commissioned by The Guardian.
Steve Macleod is Creative Director for Metro Imaging in London, having been at the forefront of photographic imaging for over twenty years, collaborating with a vast network of clients, and developing new and innovative photographic printing practices. In 2004 Steve was awarded with a fellowship of the RSA for commitment to the industry.
Steve keeps busy by curating; commissioning and lecturing in Photography both in the UK and abroad. Steve is Associate Professor at AUD in UAE; life member of Frontline Club and a Photovoice Ambassador and also a practicing artist, represented by Atlas Gallery in London.
Admission for the public is included with the exhibition day pass.
Photographers, if you have presented at Folio Friday already, please don't book again for two years in order to leave places for others.
