Print Sales at The Photographers’ Gallery presents Postcards, an exhibition featuring eight photographs from the John Hinde Limited Archive. Never before available as prints, the images were first created as part of Hinde’s famous postcard collection. Taken by John Hinde and his trained team of photographers, Elmar Ludwig, Edmund Nägele and David Noble, the pictures depict some of the nation’s best loved domestic holiday destinations during the 1960s and 70s. Showcasing Hinde’s trademark use of colour, the prints will be displayed alongside the original vintage postcards.

Born in 1916 in Somerset, England, John Hinde is considered to be one of the pioneers of colour photography. Following his training at the Reimann School of Photography Hinde went on to setup a studio in London working as a documentary, war and advertising photographer. In 1943 Hinde was made a Fellow in the Royal Photographic Society and commissioned to take pictures for books such as Citizen in War (1945), Exmoor Village (1947) and British Circus Life (1948). While working on the latter Hinde decided to quit his photographic career and join the circus as a PR manager. This was followed by a failed attempt to start his own travelling company in Ireland until finally in 1956 he returned to photography and founded his eponymous postcard business.

At the time black and white images dominated the postcard market, however as a trained colour photographer Hinde was determined to create bright and vibrant cards of English and Irish landscape. These, in particular, the Butlins Holiday Camps series, were so in demand that by 1966 Hinde was running one of the largest postcard companied in the world. Each photograph was meticulously staged, sometimes taking weeks to achieve while waiting for the right weather conditions, and processed in Italy where colour technology was more advanced.

Often considered kitsch and at a time when only black and white photography was taken seriously, Hinde’s pictures never received critical acclaim. In the late 70s colour photography finally began to receive acknowledgement from museums. Around the same time Martin Parr began to renew interest in Hinde’s work, hailing it for its documentary value and exceptional technical accomplishment.

The exhibition will include well known images such as On the road to Keem Strand, Achill Island, Co, Ireland and East Africa Picnic Game Park, Longleat, Warminster, Wiltshire as well as the brilliantly colourful nighttime scenes from Botton’s Funfair at Night, Great Yarmouth and The Dreamland Amusement Park, Margate. Restored by Marcus Davies and Michelle Abadie, both avid collectors of Hinde’s work, the prints will be showcased alongside the postcards. This will allow visitors to see the way in which the original transparencies were enhanced – from altering the colour of garments to replacing the dull sky with a brighter Mediterranean version.

In addition to the ten works on display over forty prints will be available for sale from the Print Sales space. The prints will be sold in editions of 10 for photographs sized at 30 x 37” and editions of 25 for prints sized at 19 x 24”. Prices will range from £600 - £1500.

Coinciding with Postcards in Print Sales, John Hinde’s Exmoor Village and British Circus Life photographs will be featured in Mass Observation: This is Your Photo. On display in the main Gallery spaces from 1 August - 20 October 2013.
