INFO

In Search by Image, Live (Lena/Fabio) artist Sebastian Schmieg considers evolving visual narratives which originated from the infamous image of Lena Söderberg. Shot for a Playboy magazine centerfold in 1972, the image later became ubiquitous in its use by computer programmers to test compression algorithms in digital image processing and transmission.

Responding to the gendered stereotyping of ‘Lena’ in such image technologies, scientists Deanne Needell and Rachel Ward countered her use through a paper in 2012 using–with permission–an image of the 1990’s Italian male model Fabio Lanzoni.

For the Media Wall, Schmieg has created an application that recursively downloads from Google’s ‘reverse image search’ pictures similar to Lena and Fabio. As the chain of images continues to build-up, an intangible montage is formed which, like chinese whispers, becomes more and more detached from the original.
