Print Sales Gallery presents Other Americas, an award-winning body of work by acclaimed photographer Sebastião Salgado (b. 1944, Brazil).

Taken between 1977 and 1984 Other Americas is a collection of black-and-white photographs that capture the everyday lives and the hardships of farming communities and individual living across the regions of Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala and Mexico.

Shot during a time of industrial growth, rising inequality and political turmoil, Other Americas documents a way of life under threat. This body of work, like much of Salgado’s output, reflects the tradition of ‘concerned photography’ - a phrase adopted by the US photographer, Cornell Capa – to describe a genre of socially and critically focused works and practice.

Although geographically and often linguistically separated, the people depicted are united by shared social, religious and cultural experiences, and a collective sense of pride in the face of deprivation and adversity. The images reflect the harshness and cruelty that coexists alongside tenderness and romance.

In the context of Salgado’s practice, Other Americas is often viewed as an attempt by the artist to reconnect with his native land and distill something of its essence after his years as a political exile.

He writes: When I began this body of work in 1977, after some years of adventures in Europe and Asia, my only desire was to return to my beloved land - to this Latin America so dear and profound. Here dignity and poverty ride on the same horse. The struggle for survival is very difficult, and man, a hard beast, faces it from birth till death, always with signs of resolution.

Prices start at £4,750 + VAT with prints produced in various sizes. Additional works from these series are available to view and purchase on request.
