A book review by Dominika Chmara, age 16 from Chobham Academy

I happened across this book whilst browsing in a nearby book shop. What intrigued me about it the most is the fact that it wasn't based on a traditional concept of photography but instead focused on a more modern approach towards it. With social media playing such a big role within most young people's daily lives I thought it would be an interesting book to review, as it does seem to be targeted at the younger generation.

"The Instagram Book" features a rich collection of all sorts of photography from around the world. What connects all these completely different images is the platform on which they are shared- Instagram. The interesting thing is that the book doesn't only mention a select amount of photographers, which tends to be the case with many books about photography. It allows the readers to explore variation of photography styles of more than 100 Instagram users- a combination of both amateurs as well as professional photographers.

This book has got to be one of my favourites so far when it comes to photography as I found the format of it made it a really pleasant book to read – one that isn't too serious and is quite light hearted as the amount of writing isn't overwhelming and is straight to the point meaning I can truly focus on the photography instead of vast blocks of writing. Another feature which I really enjoyed about this book is that it isn't a book which has to be read in chronological order as each page features a new artist –meaning there is no need to worry about losing the page you were on and no more bookmarks!

I love the idea of the actual artists submitting pieces about themselves as this gives the readers a way to truly learn about their experiences and what really inspired them to get involved with photography. I feel like the writing submitted by them is really personal and almost lets the reader bond with each artist, which really surprised me as the writing is not at all extensive yet it lets us find out a lot about their aspirations and what brought them close to the art they now produce. The book has inspired me both through the visual aspects of it as the featured photography is truly stunning and filled with original ideas, as well as through the literary aspect as it almost allowed me to get inside the mind of the creator of each piece. The book really does prove that Instagram isn't only a platform for personal profiles featuring low quality selfies but can truly be a place which enables talents from around the world to flourish as well as enabling them to encounter many new opportunities.

I would mainly recommend this book to students as the theme of social media is something which is a part of most young people's everyday lives therefore many could connect with the concept of it. Having read the book however, I wouldn't say this book is aimed at any particular age as it really focuses on photography- a passion which doesn't have an age limit.
