Photographer Laura Braun leads a one-day introductory workshop on how to take portrait photographs in natural light, around Soho and at the Gallery.
Participants will learn new photographic techniques and tools for making portraits using their own digital cameras (preferably SLR).
Itinerary
10.00 – 12.00
Introduction to location portrait photography, looking at:
- How photographers such as Alec Soth, Stephen Gill, Judith Joy Ross, Thomas Struth, Esko Männikkö Anders Petersen and Dianne Arbus use location portraiture in their work.
- The importance of the relationships between the photographer, the subject and the location. This is meant to be a discussion, so please bring examples, ideas, questions etc.
- Legal issues.
- Techniques like selective focus, shutter speed and using reflectors as creative tools.
12.00 – 13.00
Group practice, trying out different ideas and techniques on other participants.
13.00 - 13.30
Lunch
13.30 – 15.30
Location portraiture in Soho’s streets, parks and shops. Working in pairs participants will support each other finding and engaging with subjects and taking a series of Soho street and location portraits.
15.30 - 16.00
Tea break and downloading of images.
16.00 - 17.00
Viewing and discussion of the work produced in the workshop.
Laura Braun is a London based photographer and maker of photographic books. In recent years she has been commissioned by The Photographers’ Gallery, London for a part of her project Trade as well as for the gallery’s The World in London project to be exhibited in July 2012. In 2011 Laura set up the small publishing platform Paper Tigers Books for limited edition artists' books and multiples in order to publish her own work as well as that of collaborators and friends. www.laurabraun.net
