Featured Artist: Julie Blackmon
Julie Blackmon (b.1966, Missouri) is known for her colourful and often humourous depictions of everyday life in her series Domestic Vacations and Homegrown. As the oldest of nine children and mother to three, Blackmon’s carefully constructed compositions of domestic spaces in disarray, full of rowdy children and boisterous family gatherings reflect on shared experiences of growing up in a large family.
Blackmon’s photographs are both fictional and auto-biographical, taking inspiration from the paintings of 17th century Dutch and Flemish genre painters such as Jan Steen, to comment on the joys, challenges and expectations of family life.
“As an artist and as a mother, I believe life’s most poignant moments come from the ability to fuse fantasy and reality: to see the mythic amidst the chaos.” - Julie Blackmon
Blackmon has exhibited significantly internationally for over a decade and her reputation continues to grow. Her work is held in the collections of major institutions including The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas and The George Eastman House in New York.
