Featured Artist: Martina Lindqvist
London-based photographer Martina Lindqvist (born 1981, Finland) draws on childhood memories of places of personal signi cance in Finland, creating nostalgic works that hover somewhere between reality and the imagination. In her works, Lindqvist communicates classic ne art themes of home, nostalgia for the past, and the temporality of life.
Murmurs (2014) is a vanitas-themed series of decaying owers placed in cardboard vases photographed against Lindqvist’s ailing grandmother’s bedroom wallpaper. Throughout her adult life Lindqvist’s grand- mother was always concerned with presenting herself in what she considered to be the correct fashion to neighbours and friends. Now suffering from Alzheimer’s, she can no longer remember her family or her old home, let alone past acquaintances. The wilting owers are typically symbolic in their re ection upon the futility, and ultimate failure, of maintaining one’s image in the face of death.
Martina Lindqvist studied at the Royal College of Art in London (MA). She has exhibited in the UK, Europe and Asia and is the winner of many photographic awards, including the Jerwood Photography Awards (2008), UK Winner of the Flash Forward: Emerging Photographers Award (2010), and 2nd Prize at the Terry O’Neill Award (2011).
