FAQs and Terms & Conditions
What is TPG New Talent?
TPG New Talent (TNT) is an exhibition and mentoring award for emerging UK-based photographers and artists. Up to eight participants will be selected from an open call judged each year by a different internationally recognised practitioner. The 2019 inaugural year will be selected by American artist and photographer Jim Goldberg. The group exhibition will take place at The Photographers’ Gallery from the 14 June – 6 October 2019, each participant will also be offered a year-long mentorship with an industry professional.
Who can enter?
Any emerging UK-based photographer/artist or artistic duos whose practice has a significant focus on photography and who has not had a significant solo exhibition or published a monograph by a third-party publisher. There is no age limit. There is no need to have studied at an educational institution in the UK or elsewhere. Please note, in this context ‘UK-based’ applies to those who currently live in the UK for the majority of the year (over 6 months). A third party published monograph does not include being part of a group catalogue, self-published zines, artists books, small press publications or artist collectives. A ‘Significant solo exhibition’ refers to a one-person presentation organised by a (fully for profit) commercial gallery or publicly funded gallery. It does not restrict anyone who has been involved in self-initiated, artist run or peer organised exhibitions in non-commercial spaces from applying.
TNT encourages applications from all individuals who meet the criteria and whose work shows outstanding talent, originality and innovation.
The Photographers’ Gallery is committed to equal opportunities and we encourage applications from all persons without discrimination.
How do you apply?
Online applications will be accepted between 22 January – 19 February 2019 here. It is free to enter and each photographer/artist may submit a personal statement of up to 200 words, and up to two series of work - 16 images in total. Each series can be represented by up to 8 images (installation images can be included, file formats: .JPG file size: up to 1MB per image, no more than 16MB per total submission) with captions, and up to 400 words per project description. If animation or moving image are part of your practice, some alternative file types at a limited size can be supported, please email TNT@tpg.org.uk for more information. We advise doing this at least a week before the deadline so that you have time to transfer to a supported file type if necessary. Projects must have been started January 2015 or later but do not have to be completed. If you have not heard from us by 22 March 2019 please assume your application has not been successful.
How will it be judged and mentored?
TNT is open to all forms of photographic/artistic practices and there is no specified theme or subject matter. The guest selector will bring their own expertise to the judging criteria. TPG New Talent offers a platform to under-recognised and emerging talent in the UK by selecting practitioners whose practice displays innovation and depth of vision. We are also looking for individuals who would benefit from a year-long mentorship with an industry professional. Specific mentors will be chosen in liaison with individual photographer/artists.
How will the show be curated?
Up to 8 practitioners will be featured in the exhibition which will be curated by the guest selector, a TPG curator and the individual participants.
