Course: Performing the Photograph, Undoing the Image

Mondays 22 Jan - 26 Feb, 18.30 - 20.00 (session on 5 Feb finishes at 20.30)

This six-week course explores how identity is constructed, resisted and performed through photography and the kinds of looking it facilitates.

Both the exhibitions 4 Saints in 3 Acts and Under Cover at The Photographers’ Gallery deal in different ways with performance, photography and the archive. Contemporary theoretical approaches to race, queerness and performativity will be introduced as tools to reassess the competing claims for photography’s role in empowering or constructing marginalised bodies. Through different learning formats including talks and discussion, close looking and time spent in the current exhibitions, group exercises and film screenings, as well as a session with photographer, archivist and activist Ajamu we unpick who is looking, how, and who they are looking at, with the ultimate aim of examining and sharing our own responses to these fascinating photographs. 

Marianne Mulvey is a curator, writer and educator. From 2009-16 she was Curator, Public Programmes at Tate Britain / Modern where she curated programmes around performativity, queer and feminist practices and performance architecture, amongst other things. Marianne has also worked at The Arts Council Collection, Hayward Gallery and Gasworks, and has been a Trustee of Fierce Festival in Birmingham since 2014. She teaches on curating at higher education institutions nationally and internationally and is the recipient of a Collaborative Doctoral Partnership award between Tate and Royal College of Art in partnership with Open School East and Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art to researching public programming in art institutions.
