Featured Artist: Weronika Gęsicka
Foam Talent 2017 winner Weronika Gęsicka (b.1984, Poland) handles subjects concerning various aspects of memory, transforming archive materials and lling them with new and often unsettling meaning.
Her ongoing series Traces comprises modified vintage photographs of generic scenes of family gatherings, vacation souvenirs and everyday life purchased from an image bank. By employing inventive and often humuorous alteration, Gęsicka re-imagines new realities for these generic stock images and questions their ambiguous status as documents of people, situations, moments suspended somewhere between truth and fiction.
Weronika Gęsicka studied graphics and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 2016, Gęsicka was selected as one of Lens Culture’s Emerging Talents, won ShowOFF at the Krakow Photomonth Festival, and was a finalist for Prix Levallois. She has exhibited in numerous locations across Europe including the Belfast Photo Festival in Ireland, Festival Circulation(s) in Paris, ALAN Instanbul in Turkey, FORT Art Center, Prospero Gallery in Poland, and the Calvert 22 Foundation in London.
