Geoff Dyer on Garry Winogrand
Award-winning writer Geoff Dyer presents an illustrated tour through the life and works of US photographer Garry Winogrand. One of the most significant photographers of his generation, Winogrand’s insightful, provocative, tender and resonant images offer a masterclass in street photography.
A long-term admirer of his work, Dyer’s latest publication The Street Philosophy of Garry Winogrand brings together one hundred photographs from the Winogrand archive, each accompanied by an original essay.
In this special event for TPG, Dyer further riffs off a selection of both iconic and unseen works in trademark style, inviting new ways of looking at and connecting key themes and subjects in Winogrand’s work.
A book signing follows the talk.
Geoff Dyer’s many books include The Ongoing Moment (winner of the International Center of Photography’s prestigious Infinity Award for Writing/Criticism), But Beautiful (winner of the Somerset Maugham Prize), and Out of Sheer Rage (shortlisted for a National Book Critics Circle Award). Dyer is an honorary fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford; a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature; and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His books have been translated into twenty-four languages. Dyer is currently writer-in-residence at the University of Southern California.
