Introducing Tish Murtha: Curators' Talk + After Hours View

18:30 - 20:00

Join exhibition co-curators Val Williams and Gordon MacDonald, with TPG Senior Curator Karen McQuaid to discover the remarkable work of documentary photographer Tish Murtha.

Current exhibition Tish Murtha: Works 1976 – 1991 draws together series of photographs uncovering the lived reality of political policies, social deprivation and communities struggling to survive in austere and transitional times across Britain and the North East. Parallels to contemporary living conditions, austerity politics and growing social inequality bring a timely urgency to viewing Murtha’s work.

Following the talk there will be an opportunity to explore the exhibition outside of normal gallery hours.

Gordon MacDonald is an artist, writer, curator, press photographer and educator. He is the founding editor of Photoworks magazine and co-founded the Brighton Photo Fringe.

Karen McQuaid is Senior Curator of The Photographers’ Gallery.

Val Williams is an author, curator and Professor of the History and Culture of Photography at London College of Communications, as well as Director of the Photography and the Archive Research Centre (PARC).
