Urs Stahel: Curating Photography 1930 - 1980 - 2020

Co-founder and former curator and Director of Fotomuseum Winterthur, Urs Stahel reflects on his wide-ranging career and contemplates the past, present and future of photography curation.
Urs Stahel is a freelance writer, curator, lecturer and consultant. He is currently curator of MAST – Manofattura di Arte, Sperimentazione e Tecnologia in Bologna and consultant to the MAST collection of industrial photography, as well as lecturer at the Art Academy in Zurich (ZHdK). In collaboration with the publisher Walter Keller and the art patron George Reinhart, he founded 1993 the Fotomuseum Winterthur, and was curator and director for 20 years. He is the author and editor of numerous books on artists including Paul Graham, Roni Horn, Rineke Dijkstra, Ai Weiwei, Shirana Shahbazi, David Goldblatt, Zoe Leonard, Boris Mikhailov, Lewis Baltz, Thomas Ruff, and Dayanita Singh.
