Hear Lindokuhle Sobekwa discuss his practice in this unique online talk

Lindokuhle Sobekwa is known for his intimate documentary photography. In this online discussion, hear the South African photographer take us through his career, his relationship to the subjects he represents, and the impact his home country and its history of violence has on his work.

The conversation will be chaired by curator Sarah Allen.

Biographies

Sarah Allen is Assistant Curator, International Art at Tate Modern where she curates exhibitions and displays and researches acquisitions for the International Collection. She is co-curating the upcoming Zanele Muholi exhibition due to open in November 2020. She has also recently curated Nan Goldin (2019), Irving Penn (2019) and David Goldblatt (2019). Previous major exhibitions she has worked on have included The Shape of Light: 100 Years of Photography and Abstract Art (2018). She has a specialist focus on photobooks and is curator of the Martin Parr Photobook Collection for Tate. Outside of her role at Tate she writes catalogue texts and curates exhibitions, recent exhibitions have included Max Pinckers: Margins of Excess at Belfast Exposed Gallery (2019).

Lindokuhle Sobekwa (b 1995) was born in Katlehong, Johannesburg. He came to photography in 2012 through his participation in the Of Soul and Joy Project, an educational programme run in Thokoza, a township in the southeast of Johannesburg. He studied with Bieke Depoorter, Cyprien Clément-Delmas, Thabiso Sekgala, Tjorven Bruyneel and Kutlwano Moagi. The project also supported his completion of the foundation course at the Market Photo Workshop in 2015. In 2017, Sobekwa was selected by the Magnum Foundation for Photography and Social Justice to develop the project I carry Her photo with Me, about the disappearance of his sister, Ziyanda. He became a Magnum Nominee in 2018 and a Magnum Associate in 2020. Sobekwa’s work has been exhibited in South Africa, USA, Amsterdam and Iran. His photo essay, Nyaope was published in the Mail & Guardian (South Africa) in 2014. Most recently his work Daleside (with Cyprien Clément-Delmas) was featured in the Guardian, alongside a text by Sean O’Toole.
