If you're embarking on a creative career, the chances are that at some stage you'll benefit from some of the funding out there - directly or indirectly. The UK arts industry relies on public funding and philanthropy as well as its own ability to generate income. And to attract funding, it's increasingly important to be able to describe art and its impact in a compelling way - demonstrating the need for art, what it can achieve, and why it deserves investment...
But what is philanthropy, who are the funders, and how do you find funding? Understanding these things will help you navigate the economic challenges of working in the arts, and be aware of the financial support available to artists and creative organisations.
Sarah Davies, a senior arts fundraiser who has led Development departments at Artangel and Punchdrunk and now works freelance supporting a range of arts clients, will lead an introduction to arts fundraising with an emphasis on UK Trusts and Foundations and how to write great grant applications - you'll also have the chance to ask questions about how you might begin to look for funding for your own projects.
