In a new series that brings together fantasy and dreams, artist Jessa Fairbrother’s focus is on the body. Each contortion and gesture is exaggerated using symbols that are either embroidered or perforated onto the photographic figure. Hear the artist speak about her long exploration of the body through photography in this special talk. Moderated by artist Alexandra Davenport.

Biographies

Alexandra Davenport (she/her) is an artist and educator working primarily with performance, photography, moving image and text. Signalling back to a history in dance, her work is centred around the gestural body, adopting choreographic tools and strategies from dance as a means to explore the performativity of image-making. The relationship between the body and the camera is central to her research and recurring themes in her work include the body as image, neuroscience, and representations of womxn in visual culture. She is Lecturer in Photography at University of Portsmouth and Visiting Lecturer at Arts University Bournemouth. Her work has been exhibited internationally.

Jessa Fairbrother completed an MA in Photographic Studies from the University of Westminster (2008-10) and developed her practice while working as both lecturer and journalist. Jessa started out concentrating on acting, describing this as the source of her interest in using personal experience to activate transactions between observer and observed. In 2016 she produced the body of work Conversations with my mother as a limited edition artist book. The delicate hand-marked volume with unique perforations is held in various collections including Yale Center for British Art (New Haven, US) and libraries at the Tate (London, UK) the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK) and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (US). Jessa lives and works in Bristol, UK.
