Following his major 2016 publication Retinal Shift, Mikhael Subotzky has continued his investigations into the nature of narrative and representation, through both the still and moving image. Coinciding with new work by the South African artist, this event sees Mikhael in conversation with writer and editor Charlotte Jansen, as the two discuss practice, photography, and the nature of the gaze. A short presentation of his latest film, Epilogue: Disordered and Flatulent (2022), will open the event.

Biographies

Charlotte Jansen is a British Sri Lankan arts and culture journalist contributing to publications such as The Guardian, The Financial Times, British Vogue, Frieze and Wallpaper*. She is the author of two books on photography: Girl on Girl (LKP, 2017) and Photography Now (Tate/ilex 2021) and the host of the Dior Talks podcast series The Female Gaze.

Mikhael Subotzky (b. 1981, Cape Town, South Africa) is a Johannesburg-based artist who works across mediums - film installation, video, photography, collage and painting. His practice engages critically with the instability of images and the politics of representation. In 2020 Subotzky was named in Apollo’s 40 Under 40 Africa list as one of four artists from the African continent or diaspora who are transforming the way that art is made and experienced. Subotzky’s work also featured in the recent Tate publication Photography Now (2021) by Charlotte Jansen.
