Bookshop Studio Talk: On Ukrainian Independent Publishing (Bookshop "Eastern" European Season)

6:30pm, Thu 20 Nov 2025

Please join us in the Bookshop for an informal talk and conversation on independent publishing and cultural resilience in Ukraine today. The talk is hosted by Anastasiia Leonova, founder and publisher of Ist Publishing in Kyiv.

This event is part of our Past Programme

Our Bookshop has devised an "Eastern" European Season, marked by dedicated displays in the Bookshop, and several photo publishing events, on the occasion of The Photographers' Gallery's current exhibitions on Zofia Rydet and Boris Mikhailov.

The Talk on Ukrainian publishing will look at ist publishing’s work as a starting point. Anastasia Leonova will talk about how the publishing scene in Ukraine has been evolving during the war, how Ukrainian publishers collaborate internationally, and we will show a few recent books that reflect these processes. We'll have available the most recent photography titles by ist publishing, and Moksop (Musuem of Kharkiv School of Photography) publishing.

Some Ukrainian and Polish artists and photographers will be present on the night, we expect engaging and insightful conversations. Everyone is most welcome to join in.

ist publishing is a small press on contemporary art, theory, anthropology, design, and photography based in Ukraine. Their books focus on researching contemporary art practices in Ukraine, including art books, photobooks, and comics. Another aspect of their work is committed to translating essential texts on art theory and history, philosophy of art, and sociology of culture by leading international researchers. They curate exhibitions, organise festivals, and workshops. They're passionate about creating visually captivating storytelling around socially relevant topics. Ist was established in 2017 by a circle of like-minded people: Kateryna Nosko, Anastasiia Leonova, and Borys Filonenko.
