Pioneering artist John Hilliard is renowned for photographs that supersede the physical object represented, while American artist Justin Berry creates hyper realistic landscapes, acting as “keepsakes” from journeys experienced in games such as Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. Both explore the nature of physicality and materiality found within the camera, interrogating where – and what – the photographer is.
Joined in conversation, the pair will reflect on how images are created, viewed, and read, as well as how the two see themselves as photographers and image makers. Moderated by writer and editor Patricia Bickers.
Justin Berry is a new media artist whose work navigates the boundary between artificial and factual realities through both digital and physical platforms. Along with having exhibited his work internationally, Berry is the creator of the virtual Waymaker Gallery. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Patricia Bickers is editor of Art Monthly magazine and director of the Art Monthly Foundation. She has contributed to numerous books, including ‘Reflections on Narrative in the Work of John Hilliard’ in, John Hilliard: Werke 1969-1999, Heidelberg, 1999, and edited two volumes of Talking Art: Interviews with Artists since 2006 and 2017, which includes ‘Cover Stories’, an interview with John Hilliard. Her most recent publication is The Ends of Art Criticism, Lund Humphries, 2021. She curated ‘Print the Legend: The Myth of the West’ for the Fruitmarket Gallery, accompanied by a book of the same title and was a selector for the New Contemporaries and the Whitechapel Open, and a judge for the Turner Prize and the Northern Art Prize. She is currently an adviser for CAS.
John Hilliard is an English conceptual artist. Hilliard's ongoing body of work addresses the specificity of photography as a medium: its uncertainty as a representational device and its status within the visual arts, especially in relation to painting, cinema and commercial photography.
