Biographies
Renée Mussai is an independent curator, writer and scholar of visual culture. Formerly Senior Curator and Head of Collection & Curatorial at Autograph and Artistic Director of The Walther Collection, she is currently Senior Research Associate at the Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre (VIAD), University of Johannesburg, Associate Lecturer at University of the Arts London, Guest Lecturer at Sotheby’s Institute of Art and Chair of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation’s advisory council. Her most recent publications include the edited volume Black Chronicles: Photography, Race and Difference in Victorian Britain (May 2025), and the forthcoming sole-authored Eyes That Commit – A Visual Gathering, among several award-winning artist monographs such as Zanele Muholi: Hail, the Dark Lioness (2018, Vol I and 2024, Vol II). Mussai curates, lectures and publishes internationally on contemporary art, visual activism, archival interventions and curatorial politics. In 2024 she was guest curator at the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, USA, where she organised the travelling retrospective exhibition Mickalene Thomas: All About Love.
