Book Launch & Signing, Del LaGrace Volcano: Queer Dyke Cruising

6:00pm, Fri 21 Feb 2025

Queer Dyke Cruising introduces a new book of rare unseen images from the influential 1988 series by Del LaGrace Volcano, published for the first time by Climax Books.

Created in response to gay male cruising culture, and shaped by the activist energy of the era, Queer Dyke Cruising emerged as a bold intervention, challenging limitations placed on queerness. Shot on Hampstead Heath in North London, the series captures Jayne, Zed, Kim, and Serena in intimate, playful poses, carving out a space for the queer dyke community within this historic cruising ground.

Cruising, often dismissed as anachronistic, resists time. It is both tradition and rebellion, and this series from Volcano asserts that cruising is more than a fleeting act, that it’s a testament to queer resilience.

Del LaGrace Volcano (born California1957) is considered to be one of instigators of queer LGBTQI+ culture with a working practice that not only documents a ‘queer time and place’ but are also iconic testaments to the love, lust, and burning desire to defy the forces that seek to destroy, diminish and disrespect us. They have been making work about the queer cultural moments they have lived, created and photographed for the past fifty years.

Volcano has produced six photographic monographs: Love Bites (1991), The Drag King Book with Jack Halberstam (1999), Sublime Mutations (2000), Sex Works with Beatriz Preciado (2005) and Femmes of Power: Exploding Queer Femininities with Ulrika Dahl (2008) and most recently QUEER DYKE CRUISING, Climax Books, 2024.
