Develop, Making a Publication: Introduction to Book Binding

12:30pm, Sat 08 Nov 2025

In-Person Workshop with Maya Brasington (for 18-24 year olds)

This event is part of our Past Programme

Join artist and bookmaker Maya Brasington for a hands-on introduction to creating your own photo book. This beginner-friendly workshop will guide you through the fundamentals of the art of book binding.

You’ll learn about different approaches to photo book creation, from visual storytelling techniques to material choices. The session will include practical instruction in traditional binding methods such as:

  • Japanese stab binding
  • Three-hole and five-hole pamphlet stitching
  • French link stitch

By the end of the workshop, you'll walk away with a small, hand-bound publication of your own making!

No prior experience is necessary – all materials will be provided.

Mayas Biography

Maya Brasington is an artist, facilitator and curator based in Portsmouth, UK. She uses photography as a tool to question and explore the role photography plays in the formation of identity, memory, and imagination. Her photographic practice centres on interrogating notions of 'third space', diaspora, and the in-betweenness of identity. Recent works reflect on her Bajan heritage and family history, acting to recenter and reconnect with narratives once lost or untold. Using a combination of appropriated found images, photography, and poetry in longform projects, Maya converges the past and present, echoing memories and stories passed down generations.

This event is part of our Develop programme. The programme is a new initiative that supports young people (aged 18-24) to work towards a commissioning opportunity with The Photographers’ Gallery.
