Reality television star and socialite Kim Kardashian West currently has over 100 million followers. Her Instagram account predominantly features selfies, alongside a mix of photographs of friends, family and brand placements. The post featured in Touchstone includes two photos - a ‘swipe left’ would reveal the child’s face as he holds the mask to one side.
Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social networking service owned by Facebook, Inc. Launched in 2010, it currently has over 1 billion active users uploading and commenting on content each month.
Users ‘follow’ each other, to both show support and receive alerts to new posts. Many figures in popular culture who bulid large numbers of followers become ‘influencers’ within social media. Sponsorship of influencers by brand names is not uncommon.
This photograph featured on an iPad as part of the Touchstone programme (2012-2020). Each display consisted of a single photographic work on the Eranda studio floor where visitors were invited to respond to the question 'What do you see?' using the cards and pencils provided. A bench was placed in front of the work, encouraging people to spend a little longer than they might usually. The programme was part of a wider series of projects and activities related to visual literacy.
