Photobooth workshop: Disrupted Portraits

6:30pm, Tue 17 Nov 2026

Break the set rules of the machine in this workshop led by artist Jenny Lewis

This workshop makes use of Autofoto's photobooth at The Photographers' Gallery to create self-portraits that disrupt or disguise a typical portrait photograph. The aim is to obscure identities, rather than make them recognisable.

The photobooth is the perfect collaborator, glitching and arbitrarily malfunctioning, reflecting the unreliable portraits it captures. It has the potential to disturb the space between the lens and the subject, encouraging a disregard of the focal range, creating abstracted portraits and the promise of impermanence.

A series of props will be available to aid this process. You're also encouraged to bring your own props to make a self-portrait in your own way.

About Jenny Lewis:

Jenny Lewis is a London-based award-winning photographic artist. Her expansive lens-based practice spans 30 years and now includes installation, sound, printmaking and collage with a forensic interest in materiality. She is interested in themes of transition, loss and reconnection, disrupting and reassembling the language and constraints of photography. She has published three monographs with Hoxton Mini Press. Her works are in the permanent collections including the National Portrait Gallery, Wellcome, Pallant House and Walker Art Gallery.
