The Social: Contracts

6:30pm, Wed 11 Sep 2024

Our informal advice and networking session for photographers based on a theme

Deliberately informal, The Social includes presentations by photography/arts professionals, offering tips on chosen themes and encourages participants to join the conversation and share their own insights.

The theme for this session is ‘contracts’ with photographer Cian Oba Smith and art law specialists Simon Chadwick & Mona Yapova. Mona and Simon will offer a general overview of contracts, illustrate some of the different types of contracts and highlight a tip within each. Cian will talk about his experience of contracts and offer some tips from his perspective.

Speakers' Biogs:

Simon Chadwick & Mona Yapova both work in Mishcon de Reya's Private department. Simon has experience in acting for a wide variety of clients ranging from companies to high net worth individuals to charities, across a wide range of domestic and international commercial disputes. Simon has a particular interest in art and cultural property law and, as a member of the Art Law team, advises galleries, auction houses, artists, collectors, foundations and other public and private institutions on non-contentious and contentious art related matters. Mona specialises in Art Law and Luxury Assets. She advises artists and their estates, galleries, art foundations, collectors and charities, amongst other clients. Her practice combines advice on both contentious and non-contentious matters ranging from artist representation, the sale and purchase of art, loans, donations, and art commissions, to authenticity, attribution, and intellectual property disputes.

Cian Oba-Smith is an Irish Nigerian photographer born and raised in London. His work focuses on communities and subcultures around the world with a particular interest in approaching subjects that are often misrepresented with a view to presenting them in an alternate light. The relationship between human experience and environment is at the core of his projects. He has also worked for clients including Netflix, Airbnb and BBC Radio 4 and features in Posi+Tive, The Guardian and Dazed & Confused.
