Iain Sinclair, renowned for his evocative prose and deep understanding of urban landscape, brings the story of John Deakin to life in his new book Pariah Genius. Coinciding with its publication, hear the author in conversation with Hettie Judah.

Together, they will look at the famed Soho photographer and provide broader commentary on the intertwining themes of geography and psychology, as well as fiction and biography, which are characteristic of his writing.

Biographies

Hettie Judah is a writer and curator. She is a regular contributor to The Guardian, frieze and The Times Literary Supplement, and writes a monthly column for Apollo magazine. Her writing on art can also be found in Art Quarterly, Art Monthly, ArtReview and other publications with 'art' in the title.

Hettie is curator of the 2024 Hayward Gallery touring exhibition Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood, and author of the standalone book of the same title published internationally by Thames & Hudson.

As a broadcaster she can be heard (and sometimes seen) on programmes including BBC Radio 4’s Front Row. Her recent books include How Not To Exclude Artist Mothers (and other parents) (Lund Humphries, 2022) and Lapidarium: The Secret Lives of Stones (John Murray, London, 2022).

Iain Sinclair is a writer and filmmaker who has lived and worked in the same East London patch for fifty-six years. His books include Lights Out for the Territory, London Orbital and Hackney, That Rose-Red Empire. He recently curated a show of John Deakin photographs and archive at Swedenborg House. A film made in conjunction with Pariah Genius premiered at the Barbican.
