Anna Ridler shared her project Final Edition, an ongoing attempt to map the final edition of every local newspaper across the USA that have closed since 2004, coinciding with the launch of Facebook and the popularity rise of other social media platforms. Through sharing the difficulties that the artist is facing to accomplish the project, this Screen Walk reflected on the loss of local collective memory, the ongoing revenue challenges for the press, the political impact of social media, and the exploitation of existing visual and written content as raw data to train AI models.
Anna Ridler is an artist and researcher who works with information and data. She has exhibited at the V&A Museum, Ars Electronica and the Barbican and has degrees from the Royal College of Art, Oxford University and University of Arts London. Her interests include drawing, machine learning, data collection, storytelling, and technology.
