Helen Levitt: In The Street

The Photographers’ Gallery presents a retrospective spanning fifty years of work by the landmark American street photographer, Helen Levitt (1913–2009).

One of the most influential street photographers of the 20th Century, Helen Levitt spent decades documenting local communities in her native New York, capturing everyday city life in neighbourhoods such as the Lower East Side, Bronx, and Spanish Harlem. Working from the 1930s through the 1990s, Levitt produced an extensive body of work consisting of a variety of projects and mediums, from photographs to artist books and was an early proponent of avant-garde filmmaking.

Helen Cammock: Concrete Feathers and Porcelain Tacks

In this new film and installation project, artist Helen Cammock (b. Staffordshire, 1970) continues a practice which harnesses film, photography, print, text, song and performance to explore social histories and interrogate mainstream historical narratives. Working with residents and community groups of Rochdale, Greater Manchester Cammock engages an open dialogue to articulate both individual and collective experiences as a way of considering what it means to exist as part of a community.

Co-commissioned by TPG, Film and Video Umbrella, Contemporary Art Society (with support from the Mbili Foundation), in partnership with Touchstones Rochdale.

Light Years: The Photographers’ Gallery at 50

The next two chapters of Light Years continues to explore our rich 50-year history through archival materials and audio. Opening on 15 Oct, Beyond Documentary: from Photography to Photographies explores new artistic developments in photography that have continuously tested the boundaries of the medium, while from 10 Dec 2021, the final part of this year-long display presentsThe Archive: Collectors, Critics and Subversives which examines the links between technological innovation and vernacular photography, while charting photography's digital revolution.  

TPG New Talent 2021

Our dedicated exhibition and mentoring programme to support emerging artists working with the photographic medium. This year, six UK-based artists have been selected from an open submission process by TPG’s curatorial team and the esteemed Brazilian artist Rosângela Rennó.

Their work will be presented online and also on a public installation over Ramillies Street.  

All the artists are then offered a 12-month mentoring programme to support the next stage of their development. 

Paul Cupido: 4 a.m.

4 a.m. is the first UK solo exhibition from Dutch photographer, Paul Cupido (b.1972). Fleeting, ephemeral, abstract and dream-like, Cupido’s work is inspired by Japanese art and philosophical principles as well as his travels there. His subjects encompass landscape, portraiture, and still life; presenting stylised compositions where shadowy figures float in abstracted settings and natural forms emerge from darkness.
