Taking his work “How to Secure a Country” as a starting point, where he explores Switzerland’s formal and informal security measures, Salvatore Vitale focused on the narratives and relationships triggered by surveillance apparatuses. Performed as a play of visibility and invisibility, online and offline audiences were invited to interact in the construction of a filmic narrative in which “the watchers” and “the watched” were brought together in an attempt to redefine the power relationships around the camera. This event was a collaboration with Arte Urabana Lugano (AUL).

Screen Walks is a series of live-streamed artist/researcher-led explorations of online spaces and artistic strategies designed to illuminate a thriving – often overlooked – digital cultural scene. A new online collaboration between The Photographers’ Gallery, UK and Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland. Biography

Salvatore Vitale (b. 1986, Palermo, Italy) is a Swiss-based visual artist and editor. He studied Fine Arts at the Zurich University of Arts (ZHdK) and he was a recipient of the Swiss Arts Council grant in 2015-2016, the PHmuseum Award Grant in 2017, the Swiss Design Awards, FOAM Talent and Punctum Award in 2018. His work has been shown in museums and at photo festivals including the Swiss Foundation for Photography, Photoforum Pasquart Biel/Bienne, OCAT Shanghai and Shenzhen, MOCAK – Museum of Contemporary Art Krakow, Hamburg Triennale of Photography, T3 Photo Festival Tokyo, and Jaipur International Photography Festival.
