"Before the Tudor factory closed outside of Lisbon in mid-1970s, they rewarded their employees with a stuffed animal, identical to this one, when an employee became a parent. When I was born, my father’s six month paternity leave began with bringing home this stuffed animal from work. I still have it at our family home, seated on a chair by the window. The occasion of this photograph marks the bear’s first bath."
