This double page spread from Raising Frogs for $$$ is from a photo book where a sequence of image pairs are juxtaposed and presented without captions. Jason Fulford describes the book as being “arranged in eight distinct chapters that can be read as a game, a series of essays, an abstract visual narrative or all of the above”. All images in the book are from the artist’s personal archive.
Jason Fulford (b. 1973, USA) is a photographer and co-founder, with Leanne Shapton, of the not-for-profit publisher J&L Books. He regularly exhibits his work and runs one-off events, frequently in collaboration. He has produced five books to date including, most recently, THIS equals THAT (2014, Aperture, New York, with Tamara Shopsin).
The open book featured as part of the Touchstone programme (2012-2020). Each display consisted of a single photographic work on the Eranda studio floor where visitors were invited to respond to the question 'What do you see?' using the cards and pencils provided. A bench was placed in front of the work, encouraging people to spend a little longer than they might usually. The programme was part of a wider series of projects and activities related to visual literacy.
