Power Game is both a game and a live performance. Played as an altered version of the classic card game Chemin de Fer, with word cards created by Liliane Lijn, gambling is used to investigate the politics of identity and power. Power Game explores the meanings, misconceptions and the power and poetry of words through spectacle and play.

The Game

As a player at the table, you will have the chance to demonstrate your quick wit and originality with wordplay alongside invited players who begin the game. The aim is to secure the most votes from the other players by briefly stating what makes your word powerful – more powerful than the other player’s word. Bets can be made using gambling tokens that will be available for purchase. More information on how to play will be explained on the night. 

The live performance is filmed and simultaneously broadcast, both in the casino and in the café downstairs. Players rotate after a few rounds so others can play the game.

Please note, to enter the casino, you will need to purchase a gambling token. Valued at £1 they will be available for purchase on the evening, cash only. Further gambling tokens can be purchased to place bets for those who wish to play (must be over 18).On exiting, money is returned in exchange for tokens. Those who do not wish to play nor enter the casino can watch proceedings from the ground floor café.

Background

First staged during the Festival for Chilean Liberation at the Royal College of Art, London, in 1974, Power Game holds a mirror to our preconceptions and our fantasies of power. There is no script, no actors, no rehearsals. The artist uses participants’ behaviour and their reactions to the situation in which she places them.

Biography

Liliane Lijn’s work covers a large spectrum of interests, from light and its interaction with diverse new materials to the development of a fresh image for the feminine. Lijn has taken inspiration from incidental details both man-made and natural, mythology and poetry, science and technology. Lijn is interested in the development of language, collaborating across disciplines and making art that is interactive, in which the viewer can actively participate.
