Erica Scourti explores notions of originality and individuality in the time of algorithmic social media

This event is part of our Past Programme

So Like You is a new work by London-based artist Erica Scourti, commissioned by Photoworks, #temporarycustodians and The Photographers’ Gallery for the 2014 Brighton Photo Biennial.

Working in collaboration with online communities, Scourti sets out to make sense of a visual culture dominated by the sharing and streamlining of personal snapshots via social media channels.

Is it possible to maintain individuality, or even be creative in an arena where everyone’s photos look pretty much the same?

To answer this question, Scourti fed a personal archive of photographs, love letters, flyers and other memorabilia into Google’s Search By Image engine, which were matched to other photographs with similar visual footprints.  By entering into a creative exchange with their authors, Scourti tackles what value and originality a snapshot might have, once it's been absorbed into a larger cloud of image data.

So Like You was also showing at Brighton Photo Biennial 2014 from 4 Oct – 2 Nov 2014.

Erica Scourti was born in Athens, Greece and now lives in London. Her work in text, video and performance has been shown at spaces such as Kunstmuseum Bonn, Munich Kunstverein, Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens, Banner Repeater, The Royal Standard and Grand Union. She has completed residencies at I-Park Artists’ Enclave, USA, Vermont Studio Center, USA, The Guesthouse, Cork and Catwalk Institute, USA amongst others. Upcoming exhibitions include at Hayward Gallery Project Space, IMAPKT Festival and Northern Gallery of Contemporary Art.
