Workshop | Queer Tableaux: Photographing Ourselves

10:30am, Sat 16 May 2026

In this half-day workshop, join photographer Felix Pilgrim to explore how photography both documents and constructs queer histories

Drawing inspiration from Donna Gottschalk’s work, participants will work with photographer Felix Pilgrim to create theatrical ‘living images’ that reflect on domesticity, friendship and family, and the ways LGBTQ+ people have carved out spaces of belonging within both private and public realms.

The workshop combines writing exercises, embodied activities and collaborative tableau-making to explore how photographs carry memory, gestures of love and care, and moments of safety, resistance and joy.

Working first within a transformed studio ‘home’ and later moving onto the streets of Soho, participants will experiment with images that blur the boundaries between intimacy and visibility, the interior and exterior.

Participants will also create short letters or audio messages inspired by queer 'lonely hearts’ columns, using these as prompts for further staged photographs. Participants may use their own cameras alongside a shared black-and-white Polaroid to build an “instant archive” of the day.

This workshop reflects on how queer communities have long used performance and photography – both posed and spontaneous – to construct, reclaim and imagine worlds of belonging.

Details on how to access the sessions will be confirmed upon registration. Please check your junk folders if you haven't received an email from TPG staff confirming your place.

This includes people who identify as D/deaf, disabled* and neurodivergent; those with caring responsibilities; candidates from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse backgrounds; and arts and culture professionals whose career development has been negatively impacted by Covid-19, prioritising independent artists, freelancers and those made redundant/at risk of redundancy since 2020.

*The Equality Act 2010 defines a disabled person as someone who has a physical or mental impairment, and the impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
