To celebrate Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2021, join Alejandro Cartagena in the first of four artist talks featuring this year's shorlistees who reflect the most influential practitioners working now. Together with architect Tatiana Bilbao, who will be moderating, we will look more closely at the process of regeneration in relation to a wider historical and sociopolitical framework, which is the subject of Caragena’s nominated book, A Small Guide to Homeownership (2020).

A Small Guide to Homeownership is an amalgamation of 13 years of work, starting with Cartagena´s Fragmented Cities series made between 2005 and 2009 in which he documented the suburbanization of the Monterrey metro area in northern Mexico.

Buy NowTatiana Bilbao, architect, born in 1972, began her eponymous studio in 2004. Prior to founding her firm, Bil-bao was an Advisor in the Ministry of Development and Housing of the Government of the Federal District of Mexico City. Bilbao holds a recurrent visiting position at Yale University School of Architecture and has taught at Harvard University GSD, Columbia University GSAPP, Rice University, AA in London Summer School, University of Andrés Bello in Chile, and Peter Behrens School of Arts at Dusseldorf in Germany. Bilbao has been recognized with the Kunstpreis Berlin in 2012, the Global Award for Sustainable Architec-ture Prize by the LOCUS Foundation in 2014, the Marcus Prize Award 2019, Tau Sigma Delta Gold Medal of the ACSA 2020, and the Honorary Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) en 2021.
In his most recent book, Mexican photographer Alejandro Cartagena (b. 1977, Dominican Republic) continues his extensive visual documentation of the urbanisation of land in northern Mexico. The result from over 15 years of work, the project considers idealised notions of life in the suburbs and the enormous impact these dysfunctional developments have had on the surrounding region through transportation links, infrastructure and a cookie-cutter approach to architecture and urban planning. A Small Guide to Homeownership takes its stylistic cues from the ubiquitous How to...? guide books. Printed on thin paper and running to over 300 pages, it encompasses an extensive range of visual material.
