Lee Miller, Della Oake in “Fashion for Travel” Glamour, Waterloo Station, London (1949)

This event is part of our Past Programme

This photograph is part of the “Fashion for Travel” series Lee Miller produced for the U.S. magazine Glamour featuring Della Oake in a range of London locations. Like John Deakin, exhibited at The Photographers’ Gallery from 11 April – 13 July 2014, Miller also photographed for Vogue – as a war correspondent and, later, covering fashion and celebrities.

Della Oake modeled for other photographers including John Deakin, Norman Parkinson, Henry Clarke and Cecil Beaton. While Lee Miller also modeled, most famously for Man Ray, she is known to have remarked in 1932, “I’d rather take a picture than be in one.”

This photograph featured as part of the Touchstone programme (2012-2020). Each display consisted of a single photographic work on the Eranda studio floor where visitors were invited to respond to the question 'What do you see?' using the cards and pencils provided. A bench was placed in front of the work, encouraging people to spend a little longer than they might usually. The programme was part of a wider series of projects and activities related to visual literacy.
