Open Call: Open Space AR Mentoring Programme

Tue 19 Oct 2021 - Mon 15 Nov 2021

This event is part of our Past Programme

This opportunity is open to 18 - 24 year olds. Apply for a free place on an Augmented Reality (AR) workshop series leading to an opportunity to receive a paid AR commission and mentoring from digital artists and curators.

AR is a technology that uses digital content to extend a view of our physical world when experienced through the screen of your mobile phone or tablet. Facial filters, animated landscapes and interactive virtual elements are just some examples of how this digital technology is merging with the user’s real-world environment. Think Pokémon GO.

The Photographers’ Gallery is working in partnership with curator Zaiba Jabbar (HERVISIONS) on the Open Space AR programme that will be launched in Spring 2022 with commissions by Keiken, Hyphen-Labs and Josèfa Ntjam. As part of this, we are looking for twenty AR-curious 18-24-year-olds, based anywhere in the UK, to take part in four online workshops.

During the workshops, the selected participants will be introduced to AR tools and techniques, as well as some critical ideas about its production and content. Workshop participants will then be asked to propose an AR artwork that could be realised by Spring 2022.

Up to six of the proposed artworks will be selected for commission. Each commissioned creative will receive an artist fee of £500 and a production fee of £1,000. Each commission will also be supported by a series of one-to-one online guidance sessions with an established curator or AR artist.

The final AR works will be publicly launched on The Photographers’ Gallery website and social media from March 2022 to March 2023.

The application portal is now closed.

Calendar

The four online workshops for the 20 selected artists will take place between 18th November and 18th December, as both evening and weekend sessions.

The further guidance sessions for selected proposals will take place between January and February 2022. The precise date of each of the sessions will be arranged according to the availability of the participants.
