Launched on Fri 14 Jan 2022, In Real Life is a publication produced by a group of young people from The Photographers’ Gallery’s creative careers programme Develop. From July to December 2021 the group attended sessions, created work, wrote articles and led on design, to form In Real Life.
Since 2017, Develop has set out to support and inspire young people in pursuing a photography-related career. From artist talks and practical workshops to youth led exhibitions, it’s harnessed opportunity and connection, and become a community of like-minded people. In March 2020, in response to Covid-19, the programme became Develop at Home, a virtual adaptation that brought with it new audiences beyond London.
In Real Life is a celebration of the stories and aspirations of every person involved. It’s for young creatives, by young creatives and the physical publication has grown from an online community. After attending workshops like how to pitch your ideas and how to write about photography and being a publisher, participants were invited to create submissions, gaining in real life, paid experience.
