Are you interested in talking about socially engaged practice?

Deliberately informal, The Social includes presentations by photography/arts professionals, offering tips on chosen themes. Participants are encouraged to join the conversation and share their own insights.

The theme for this session is 'socially engaged practice' with photographer Rehan Jamil, and visual sociologist Tiffany Fairey. Together they will offer some background and advice related to the theme.

Biographies

Tiffany Fairey is a visual sociologist and leading photovoice and visual peace specialist with more than two decades of experience in participatory research, innovation, and practice in academic, community and NGO settings. She joined the Department of War Studies at King's College London in 2019 having previously been based at University of the Arts London and co-founded and led the award-winning charity, PhotoVoice.

Rehan Jamil is a British Pakistani social documentary photographer working with marginalised communities, with a particular focus on British Muslims across the UK. His practice focuses on long-term projects that explore identity, belonging, and social change. Most recently, he completed a two-year socially engaged residency with Historic England, exploring the history and community of Petticoat Lane. His co-curated project This is Me, developed in collaboration with the Mile End Community Project girls’ group, is now part of the permanent collection at the Young V&A.
