Join photographer and photobooth expert Rafael Hortala Vallvé and designer and creative director Corinne Quin for a talk exploring the mechanical and cultural history of the photobooth. 

Coinciding with the presentation of their project AUTOFOTO at The Photographers’ Gallery, the talk traces the photobooth’s evolution from a common feature at fairs, shopping centres and train stations to a site of intimacy, chance and artistic experimentation. 

Drawing on research into the history of automated portraiture and to recent work with contemporary artists to reimagine the photostrip, the pair reflect on their shared fascination with this enduring photographic device. Together, they consider how the photobooth continues to invite play, performance and the re-staging of the self in an increasingly digital world. They’ll reflect on what drew them to this intersection of technology, identity and memory — and how AUTOFOTO invites audiences to inhabit and reimagine that intersection in their own image.

This event coincides with Strike a Pose! 100 Years of the Photobooth, featuring work from the collection of Raynal Pellicer and is part of a year-long programme of centenary celebrations, in partnership with AUTOFOTO.
