This workshop has now sold out! We have another one on Wednesday 4 February: book here
Inspired by the “problems” encountered with the analogue photobooth, join this evening workshop as we experiment with some common “failures” of the photobooth – technical mistakes usually destined for the bin – to create a new kind of portrait. By deliberately leaning into the mistakes and testing the limits of the machine, together we will learn how the booth works from the inside out, uncovering its chemical, mechanical and material processes.
Alongside hands-on exercises, photographer Rafael Hortala Vallve will share some of the most surprising and inventive photobooth misfires drawn from the archive of AUTOFOTO, the artist-led project he co-runs with designer Corinne Quin.
Guided experiments and activities will explore:
- Partial development – what happens when the strip only dips into some of the booth’s chemicals;
- Exposure – how clothing and colour alter the light balance of the strip;
- Vintage effects – the unpredictable tones and stains of exhausted chemistry;
- Focus – recalibrating the lens for extreme close-up or blur;
- Flash – embracing the un-posed with movement, chance and spontaneity.
The session invites you to rethink what a portrait can be, finding creativity in imperfection and humour in the unexpected. Everyone will walk away with five unique photostrips capturing the results of their experiments in our own analogue photobooth at the Gallery.
Details on how to access the event will be confirmed upon registration. Please check your junk folders if you haven't received an email from TPG staff confirming your place.
