Doreen Ríos explored the rise of the Internet in Mexico through a series of cyberprotests fueled by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in the late 90’s, in order to highlight discourses of tactical media and hacktivism.

She explored the implications of web-based radical collectiveness through the lens of the Electronic Disturbance Theater 1.0 and 2.0, as well as the platforms that allowed for the spread of political critique and multidirectional action. Using Cuánto tiempo lleva todo esto derramándose sin desbordarse (How much time has been all this spilling without overflowing) as a starting point – a 'retrocollective' exhibition of Ricardo Dominguez' work curated by Ríos – the audience was teleported to diverse political scenarios connecting Mexico, the USA, Ars Electronica and more.

Biography

Doreen A. Ríos is an independent curator and researcher. Working with digital art and specialising in digital cultures and new media practices, Ríos’ curatorial practice focuses on hybrid materialities. She is also the founder of [ANTI]MATERIA, an online platform dedicated to the research and exhibition of Latin-American Digital Art.
