In this new talk featuring Johny Pitts and Roger Robinson, the exhibiting photographer and the poet discuss their experiences travelling across the British coast as they seek answers to the question ‘what is Black Britain?’ The resulting publication from which this exhibition takes its name contemplates all the possibilities and definitions of home – particularly what it means for those living in diaspora.

Together they will talk through their journey and friendship, and where they hope their collaboration positions the stories of Black lives in the histories of this country. Moderated by Shoair Mavlian, Director of The Photographers’ Gallery.

Biographies

Born in Sheffield, Johny Pitts is a self-taught photographer, writer and broadcaster. The founder of the online journal Afropean.com and author of Afropean: Notes from Black Europe, Pitts spent more than a decade documenting the Black experience in Europe. He currently presents Open Book for BBC Radio 4 and a forthcoming Afropean podcast funded by a grant from the National Geographic Society. Pitts has contributed words and images for The Guardian, The New Statesman, The New York Times and Condé Nast Traveller. His first solo show was held at Foam in Amsterdam in 2020.

Roger Robinson is a writer and educator who has taught and performed worldwide and is an experienced workshop leader and lecturer on poetry. He was chosen by Decibel as one of 50 writers who have influenced the Black British writing canon. He received commissions from The National Trust, London Open House, BBC, The National Portrait Gallery, V&A, INIVA, MK Gallery and Theatre Royal Stratford East where he also was associate artist. He is an alumni of The Complete Works.
