This event is part of our Past Programme

Perfectly Clear depicts a 3D-animated hand cleaning a dirty window. We see it moving methodically behind the glass pane, obscured by layers of dust, dirt and grime which are slowly erased.

The hand was created through a combination of motion capture — involving a performer with gyroscopic sensors on her fingers — translated onto a digital scan of the artist’s own hand. The awkward gestures, coupled with a quiet, circular narrative, contrasts with the dramatic and hyperreal rendering that has become commonplace in Hollywood.

The work considers how much experience is now mediated through screens, our tactile interaction with them, and how this can both clarify and obscure the virtual and physical worlds. With painstaking attention to everyday details, Perfectly Clear offers an uneasy meditative space where watching soapy water drip down the surface of the glass, or a dust cloth rub against it, both draws us in and prevents us from ever gaining a clear view.
