Our custom-made camera obscura pays tribute to an optical phenomenon that led to the invention of the camera.
Join artist Gisela Torres in this one-day workshop using contemporary and historical techniques to create work inspired by the camera obscura.
Experiment with pinhole viewfinders, paper sculpture, and smartphone or DSLR cameras to make surreal, sculptural images using the city and sky as backdrops.
What to expect
The morning session takes in the history of the camera obscura. This includes how contemporary artists use it in their work Following this, you'll begin experimenting to produce images.
After lunch, participants break into groups to create paper cut-outs and sculptures. Each unique work will make use of surrounding natural elements producing an assemblage of forms that will tell a visual story in time and space.
---
By taking part, you will be introduced to a range of ways to use the camera obscura creatively as well as how to extend images into sculptural forms to produce distinct, often surreal, work.
