With spring, we celebrate photographic innovation, excellence and talent as the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2024 returns to The Photographers’ Gallery. The acclaimed 2024 shortlisted artists are VALIE EXPORT, Gauri Gill and Rajesh Vangad, Lebohang Kganye and Hrair Sarkissian. The Prize winner will be announced on 16 May.

London-born photographer Bert Hardy (1913-1995, UK) was an influential English press and documentary photographer known for his work as chief photographer for Picture Post magazine. Born into a working-class family in Blackfriars, Hardy was self-taught and worked as both a combat photographer and an advertising photographer during his unparalleled career.

“Everyone has a place in our garden.” Siân Davey.
Right outside the Gallery, in Soho Photography Quarter, explore The Garden by British photographer Siân Davey. Together with her son, the artist transformed an abandoned back garden to welcome native flowers and biodiversity along with the community that she captured in deeply poetic images.

London-based photographer Dorothy Bohm (Germany 1924 – London 2023) is hailed as a doyenne of British photography. Mostly focussing on fragments of the urban landscape, her work often highlights elements of life that are otherwise overlooked.

Moving into summer we’ll welcome Ernest Cole: House of Bondage to the Gallery.
This substantial exhibition revisits South-African photographer Ernest Cole’s (1940-1990) ground-breaking project House of Bondage. In 1966 Cole fled South Africa and smuggled out his photographs, settling in New York. House of Bondage was published in 1967 and revealed the brutality and injustice of apartheid to the world. It became one of the most significant photobooks of the twentieth century.
Exhibition realised in collaboration with Magnum Photos. Curated by Anne-Marie Beckmann and Andrea Holzherr.

Whether capturing Frida Kahlo's house, wild dogs in India or the Seri people in Mexico's Sonara desert, Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide (born May 16, 1942) presents the world in black in white - or as she describes it, as "an abstraction of the mind."
Travelling with her camera every day and often living with her subjects for months, Iturbide says that her process is similar to that of a travel photographer, except that she only shoots "what surprises and provokes an emotion that I want to capture."

Our Develop Curatorial Collective will be curating our third-floor exhibition in June 2024 on the theme of Archives. Develop is part of our youth programme at The Photographers' Gallery and works to support and commission 18-24 year olds.

To round off 2024, we’ll be showing the first major UK exhibition of Italian photographer and photojournalist Letizia Battaglia (1935 - 2022). Best known for her work documenting the Sicilian Mafia during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, she used her camera to record the daily terror of organised crime, putting it on the front page. Over her 40-year career she photographed murder victims, processions, religious festivals, wealth and poverty, beauty and decay, in and around Palermo, providing an expansive and intimate view of the iconic Sicilian city.
In collaboration with Paolo Falcone and the Letizia Battaglia Archive.

Deborah Turbeville: Photocollage presents the work of a truly innovative, American fashion photographer, Deborah Turbeville (1932-2013), whose female gaze transformed fashion photography. Featuring some of her personal vintage photocollages, in what will be her first solo exhibition in the UK, the exhibition is realised in collaboration with Photo Elysee in Lausanne and the MUUS collection, USA.

And finishing the year in our archive display we’ll take a look back at Ten.8 - a journal which began in 1979 and provided a forum for West Midlands-based photographers to come together and share images and ideas. When the last edition was published in 1992, Ten.8 had developed into an internationally acclaimed journal. In collaboration with International Curators Forum and the editors of Ten.8 magazine, we’ll look back at the legacy of Ten.8 and its wider influence.
